FOX TALES ON STAMPS

Edition #624  Friday, December 16, 2016

811 Princess Avenue

Progress on Princess Avenue. The carpets are down, the lights are in, the final painting is done. Another few weeks and we'll be in our new digs. This is a series of "almost there" photos so you can compare pictures with previous updates. This is the office Andrew and I will be using. If anyone needs a fridge, this one is available for free. The mailing cost may be a bit prohibitive though, especially for our Asian or European clients.

This is how the mailing area looks with the connecting door into Jonathan's office.

The concrete floor in the main area has been painted and sealed. All the doorways and hallways are fully wheelchair accessible. There are no stairs.

The kitchen is almost all in.

The secured storage area is well lit and has a usefully high ceiling.

There is still a lot of shelving to assemble. The ping-pong table will be a feature in the main area.

Leftover bits and pieces in the main flex space and garage. Considering what the warehouse looked like when we first purchased it, this is a pretty remarkable makeover. When we're finally in, we'll give you another rundown and give you details on the Grand Opening.

Goldstream Provincial Park

Now, just to prove to you we do get out and about every once and again, here is a brief report on our field trip to Goldstream Provincial Park, just north of Victoria at the start of the Malahat Drive. This welcome hut is a new feature of the park.

The park is a popular spot for families and groups. Picturesque and wild yet accessible, Goldstream Park was one of Emily Carr's favourite haunts.

Big Leaf Maples are one of the deciduous trees in the park.

The Goldstream River is home to thousands of returning salmon every year. By December the run is effectively over with only bits and pieces left for scavengers.

These are the gravel flats where most of the salmon spawn. Across the river in the near distance is Mount Finlayson, a moderately strenuous yet rewarding climb.

These tapped out and picked over carcasses still retain important nutrients for both next year's salmon fry and for all the trees and vegetation flanking the river.

For these two, their ocean spanning voyage is over.

Low lying ponds and side streams make Goldstream Park an ideal nursery for young salmon.

The size of this old growth stump gives you some idea of the pre-logging giants filling this valley.

This tunnel, running under the Trans-Canada Highway, leads to the Niagara Canyon. Bone dry in summer, it can be a raging torrent in the rainy season.

The Nature House is a welcome stop for most visitors to the park. Inside are numerous nature displays, a small shop offering educational materials, books and toys for sale and most importantly on a day like today, steaming hot chocolate.

The Goldstream estuary lies at the south end of Saanich Inlet. A sensitive ecological zone, boaters of any kind (including kayakers and canoeists) are forbidden from approaching closely. At peak salmon spawning times large numbers of bald eagles and other scavengers inhabit the park.

Viola Desmond

The Bank of Canada has chosen to honour Viola Desmond as the first non-royal female depicted on our $10 banknote. As you can see here Canada Post, with this 2012 commemorative issue, has already "been there and done that". Read more about Viola Desmond here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viola_Desmond
