John Beddows
|
|
This past July the world of Canadian philately lost one its kindest, most pleasant, knowledgeable and fair members with the passing of John Beddows of North Bay, Ontario. John was a fixture at most Central and Eastern Canadian stamp exhibitions, bourses and auctions. Andrew had known John since the early 1980s when Andrew was based out of Montreal and has many fond memories of times spent with John, both professionally and socially. As a fellow long time member and director of the Canadian Stamp Dealer's Association, John always attempted to set a positive and progressive tone with regards to all aspects of philately. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
BEDDOWS, John George
John George Beddows North Bay, Ontario, passed away suddenly after a short illness surrounded by family at St Michael's Hospital on Friday, July 21, 2017 at the age of 78 years. Born December 18th, 1939, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was the child of the late Évangéline "Éva" Marie Beddows (née Brisson) and John "Jack" Sydney Beddows.
John is survived by his beloved wife Betty Ann Beddows (née Emms) and his six children and their families: Patricia Judith Lanktree (daughter Matilda), Ruth Young (husband Gary Young and children Connor and Christopher), John Sydney Beddows (wife Sheri Hiebert-Beddows and children Nole (wife Aja), Zara and Scarlett), Joseph "Joël" Lukas Beddows (husband Isaac Lawrence Aronovitch and daughter Raphaëlle), Patricia Anne Beddows (husband Edward Mallon) and John Cameron Beddows.
John worked for over thirty years as a secondary school teacher at É.S. Northern S.S. in Sturgeon Falls before joining the teaching staff of the adult education program in North Bay. A life member of the American Philatelics Society and the Royal Philatelic Society of Canada, John was a fervent philatelist and well respected throughout Canada's stamp collecting community. He also ran Camp Horizon in Field for over twenty years before founding the Jewel Lake Wilderness Resort in West Nipissing with his wife Betty. They shared his vision of living with and respecting nature. He was a dear friend to many and took great pride in the accomplishments of his former students and family members.
Donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre in memory of John will be gratefully acknowledged by his family.
