Australia - Bankers box half-filled with a balance of an extensive estate that we have been selling over the past few months. A mix of old and new. There is a bit of unsorted and assorted "States", only a few ‘Roos, and then a small holding of mostly used King George V heads (a couple of the mint indicate that they have inverted watermarks). Some nice cancels and multiples are noted, including a £1 Arms block. Among the decimal era, we noted a mint set of the Explorers, Cook souvenir sheets (regular and ANPEX), plus some mint into the early 1980’s with face values to A$10. This collection has been filled with surprises, so you never know if it has one more trick up its sleeve. Estimate =

Australia - The consignor has spoken: Let the rest of it go. A beautiful, mostly mint, collection balance, starting with a few ‘Roos, a few King George V "Heads" to 1/4, the "Melbourne issue", followed by three of the four "Arms" including the £2, the higher values of the Explorer issue (including the 10/-, £1 and £2). There are a dozen different complete booklets including the Prime Ministers. "OS" overprints include a near complete range (either mint or used), plus a couple of blocks and a nice corner block of CO1 (Air mail official). There are a few assorted pieces to entertain you, but of much less value. Estimate =

Austria - A "back of the book" holding, with a few post-war regular issues thrown in, all tucked into a 1" 3-ring binder. Includes lots of semi-postals (mostly mint, up to 1976), airmails, postage dues, newspaper, a bit of occupation overprint and some Bosnia and Herzegovina. Several hundred stamps, with a bit of duplication. Much of the material is in old, clear mounts which are not always holding the stamps as was intended, which is the only downside to this nice lot. Barbados #12/180, MR1. A mixed batch of 16 mostly mint (or unused) classics up to 1927. Belgian Congo #14/129 plus Back of the Book. An unexplored dealer’s stockbook with a decent offering of 1890's-1928 issues, both mint and used, with 1-15 examples of most. The mint is fresh and hinged, the used are often selected for the quality and readability of their cancels, including many from smaller communities. A quick check showed individual stamps with catalogue values up to $20.00 each, and the total catalogue value will climb quickly, as there are a few hundred stamps here. The only downside is that this 16-page Uni-Safe stockbook has been dropped a couple of times. We have somewhat successfully got most of the material back to where it should be, but more organizing will be required. You don’t see lots like this anymore! Estimate =

Bosnia and Herzegovina #30d/42f. Two pages with two groups of "Compound" perforations on the 1906 "Scenery" commemoratives, where sheets contained two or three different gauges of perforations within each sheet, giving many unusual combinations. These are listed in Scott Classic (among others). The first page has 8 used and 1 mint example from the "f" family (perf 9-1/4 and 6-1/2) while the second page has 16 examples from the "d" family (perf 6-1/2, 9-1/4 and 12-1/2). Where there is duplication, it is because the various perforations are on different sides of the stamps. The perf 6-1/2 is notorious for being blunted, and two examples are not counted because of damage. Otherwise, a very presentable group. Total 2021 Scott Classic US$696.25 =

British Commonwealth - A diverse estate balance doing a decent job to fill a bankers box, about half is loose material on album pages, stock cards and in glassines. Includes an interesting holding of Heligoland (British colony in Germany, notorious for forged and reprinted stamps), noted some Caribbean, including classic Bahamas and newer St-Kitts overprints and Specimens. There is some overprints for Middle Eastern colonies and some Aden issue, some Guyana independence overprinted issues that may hold some interest and there is some modern African imperfs and gold foil issues. The second half of the box is a trio of "open face" red dealer’s boxes with "102" cards, probably a couple thousand in total with a mix of mint and used, mostly common material, but with the occasional better item. Canada #104/122 plus Coils and War Tax. Two stockpages of mint Admirals, as assembled by a collector. The first page (43 stamps) are Hinged, with the second page (36 stamps) being Never Hinged. A nice array of material here, which ranges from the 1c to $1.00 value, plus imperforates, War Tax and Coils. Also accompanied by two different older (but still relevant) publications on the Admiral issue by George V. Marler. Canada - Private Courier stamp HOARD. BC-based private courier service mint label hoard from the estate of the person who ran the operation. Starting in the early 1980s, during a postal strike, a local post service was setup to run international mail over to Port Angeles, WA for a fee, paid for by a label attached to the back flap, along with appropriate American postage. Based on its popularity with collectors, additional stamps were produced for the next decade. Locally printed, these stamps have significant variability in print quality, rouletting etc. After 40 years of handling and storage, the condition can be a bit mixed in place, but overall these are pretty nice. The counts are for complete sheets, although extra blocks and singles may be hiding. Saw Canadian Postal Strike Labels (sheetlets of 18) - the 50c (23 sheets), $1.00 (46 sheets), $1.85 rouletted edge (35), imperforate edge (28). The three small designs of the same issue in 34 sheets of 30 stamps. The BC Courier Service "Horse" issue in sheets of 25 (<1 oz (12), 1-3 oz (6), >3 oz (6)). 1983 "Fish" issue: 75c fully rouletted (7), imperforate ends (8), $4.50 (1) and the same issue overprinted "1985" - often with interleaving white paper 75c orange rouletted (3), imperforate edge (10), 75c pink (19), $1.50 (16), $4.50 (4). The BC Private Courier "Animal" issues include the 1984 75c (65), $1.50 (4). The 1988 series 75c orange (7), white (6), $1.50 green (34) white (4), $4.50 pink (28), white (1).The 1989 series 75c (40), $1.50 (29), $4.50 (35). These issues have been under-appreciated for their topical interest (fish, transportation, animals). A total of over 15,000 stamps on over 600 sheets! Canada Cancels - Unbelievable hoard of 1977-1983 medium to high value used, hand cancelled, plate blocks on piece, from an extensive correspondence between a stamp collector in Edmonton and a friend in Poland. From what we can tell, every couple of weeks, he would send a good sized parcel by registered mail, franked with 50c-$5.00 plate blocks (lots of National Parks issues), many in matched sets and hand cancelled (mostly with an Edmonton Sub 58 POCON cancel). The plate blocks were cut from the parcels and dutifully returned to the collector who mounted them chronologically in page protectors. Clean, fresh and attractive. We roughly counted 400 plate blocks. Some of the larger pieces include shipping information which could make it possible to figure out which rate they paid. A study opportunity that doesn’t come up often (or ever)! Estimate =

Canada Covers - "The Story of Canada" First Day Covers with Matching Mint Stamps. Very expensive "by subscription" collection of specially prepared deluxe First Day Covers in four volumes. This "The Story of Canada" collection consists of 84 different gold foil cacheted FDCs, all mounted on a full colour illustrated page with a story on the event being commemorated, along with a VF mint NH Canadian (or Newfoundland) stamp also associated with the event. Not quite a complete run of all the covers, as many of the subscribers ended the acquisition of these pricey items ($9.95 each for an original cost for this lot of $835.80) as the cost became excessive. Still a great collection for the fan of Canadian history and scarce cachet types for the FDC cachet collector. Estimate =

Canada Covers - Alberta cancel mini-hoard in a bankers box. The results of at least three collectors who collaborated to obtain hand cancels from every post office and (more importantly) sub-post office in the province. A very successful partnership that involved research, patience and a substantial financial commitment. Many of these cancels will likely only exist because of their work. This was the balance of one of the collector’s stamp room, and has no indication of any order. A banker’s box is filled with philatelic, favour, personal and commercial covers (plus a number of cut-down covers and large pieces), of both #8 and #10 sized mostly from 1990-2022, but with scattered items back to the 1950’s. Expect some minor duplication amongst the approximately 1700 covers. It cost a small fortune to acquire, and it will take a larger fortune if you try to repeat this venture. A bargain at the estimated value. Estimate =

Canada Covers - Large correspondence of philatelically inspired covers sent 1974-1984 within Canada and often to West Germany or Poland. Usually #9 or #10 sized covers, with a typed address, attractive franking (some mailed on the first day of issue), with additional Canada Post labels (e.g. "Fragile", "First Class", etc.) and some ephemera. Lots of registered usages and sent periodically every couple of weeks and apparently with different weights of contents, making this an excellent study for 1970’s rate collectors. Most of these were also hand cancelled, which has some potential for collectors of Edmonton-area sub-office post marks. Sorted by post offices with "G" to "Y" towns (including a number of Lethbridge and Medicine Hat sub offices), plus Calgary subs 63 to 148 and Edmonton main post office, plus a few Stations and Sub-Offices. Besides the interesting rates, there is a host of short-lived and certainly obsolete hand cancels, registered markings, etc. Presumably a number of these post offices are also gone or changed status. The only downside to this lot is that part of making these albums involved taping the covers in. Most will remove with minimal damage, but it will slow down the process. An opportunity that doesn’t come around very often. Estimate =

Canada Covers - Modern cancel hunt filling a pair of envelope boxes with the results of a circa 2008-2009 mail out to Post Offices across the country with a self-addressed stamp envelope requesting the post office to return it with a hand cancellation from that Post Office. This effort resulted in several hundred #10 covers from "rural" post offices, mostly franked with commemoratives or Christmas issues struck with 6-digit POCON/HRIS or "Wing" cancels, or the "Pictorial" CDS cancels that were popular at the time. We didn’t see any Quebec or Northwest Territories, but there is lots of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland-Labrador and Ontario, with about a half box from the Western Provinces. Postmasters sometimes included notes about the post office, or the closure dates for Post Offices. These get to be a more and more expensive proposition each year, so take advantage of this 15 year-old effort. Estimate =

Canada Covers - Not your usual group of philatelically-inspired covers and FDCs. Between 1971 and 1984, this Edmonton-area collector/dealer created about 300 covers with no cachets, but used value added services (typically registration or Special Delivery). When he mounted the covers in four 3-ring binders, he added a number of brochures, posters or the inserts that came when buying complete panes. The covers are #10 sized or bigger and used the contemporary stamp(s) along with some older issues to make up the rate. The covers usually had post office labels added, typically for the service and/or a "1st Class" or "Fragile" label. The items were sent from a range of post offices, with hand cancels, so a number of cancels await the postmark collector (including a few MOON cancels). Estimate =

Most are favor covers, send "under-cover" to these Post Offices (many rural) to obtain the postmark and are dated from the 1970's to 1990's. Canada Covers - U-Haul box packed with Alberta Health Services return envelopes from the 6c era (1969-1970), mostly non-standard sized envelopes used with commemoratives. As you would expect, most are used from Alberta, with many small town cancels seen. There is also an indication that the person who pulled these envelopes was interested in paper types, so a UV-lamp may help with your exploration. Canada Covers - Western Canada cancel stash in different forms from different sources. BC is covered with a shoebox of around 500 #8 covers back to the KEVII era, but mostly early Elizabethan (could be some interesting corner cards). Alberta has two small binders, one with "R" towns the other from "T" towns on stamp, piece and cover. Saskatchewan towns of "D" to "O" post offices are sorted in unused Canada First Day cachet covers, and a mounted collection of "A" to "E" towns. There is a small but clean collection of Manitoba collections. German Democratic Republic #48/881, B14/B136. A quite thorough mint collection of the first 20 years of DDR commemorative sets and singles in a 32-page Lighthouse stockbook, with issues from 1948-1966. German Democratic Republic - Collection of mint and used covering just over a quarter century of DDR issues, including some "back of the book". Includes a mix of assorted earlier sets and singles with catalogue values in the $5-$10 range, but with better such as the 50pf Mao, a nicely used examples of the "Engels" and "Thalmann" souvenir sheets and the 1958 semi-postal souvenir sheet #B35a with a "Buchenwald" cancel. There are over 1000 different stamps covering 1949-1977, with a bit of duplication. The collector appears to have acquired album pages from four different series (e.g. Lighthouse, Ka-be) and then amalgamated them together (with handwritten numbers in the lower corners). Germany Covers - Accumulation of over 130 commercial and philatelically inspired covers, mostly sent to Canada between 1977-1980. Besides the attractive use of stamps, including sets and souvenir sheets neatly hand cancelled, a number were sent by "value added" services, such as airmail, registration and special delivery, which increases the complexity of the rates covered. There are also a couple larger pieces not counted. A few have original letters inside. As over 40 years have passed since these were sent, there is more appreciation among collectors looking to exhibit rates from the period. Estimate =

Germany, States, Berlin, Occupation issues, Colonies #4/1054, B3/B471. Pre-1975 collection of almost everything (West) German in older Lighthouse springback binder, in decent condition. Starts with a mixed page of 17 German States issues (with some Bavaria later on in the album), and transitions quickly to a German Reich "sampler" group before settling down to a solid post-WWI grouping of mint and used, with lots of "hyper-inflation" and Third Reich material, with a good offering of post-war issues, including most of the good semi-postals (with set catalogue values up to $100.00), and mostly mint from the 1960’s onwards. The Berlin includes some overprints, some nice mint and used "Bells". Other occupied areas include Baden, Reinland-Pfalz, Wurttemberg, with a smattering of Colonial and Occupied issues and various issues from Saar (under various administrations). Pages run to 1965 and then quadrilled pages were used. About 2000 stamps (no souvenir sheets of note), with catalogue values that will add up quickly. Very lightly hinged. Estimate =

Great Britain - A pair of red, older, small format, stockbooks with a chaotic mixture of mostly used Victorian-era material, with a bit up to King George VI. Both look like they were used for organizing a collection or storing duplicates, during the 1970s, when this material catalogued significantly less. During that time, material was added, removed, and moved around. Sometimes with notations, often not. Overall, we see a few hundred stamps with substantial catalogue value that seem to be in reasonable condition, with lots of potential for studies of different printings and cancels. Great Britain - An astronomical value holding of 360 stamps within 27 retired APS (American Philatelic Society) circuit books. Stamps are predominantly used, with some of the books having been well picked, others barely touched, with "remaining value" being mostly in the $200.00 to $450.00 range per book (US Dollars). A wealth of Queen Victoria / Edward / George V used issued with MANY "schilling values", "seahorses" and high-values throughout. The remaining value (as retail) in these books adds up to an impressive $7500+, which when you consider that the stamps are generally priced at 20% of catalogue value, giving a potential catalogue value of over $37,000 (by 2006 Scott!!). Netherlands - Numeral town cancel collection part I: This remarkable mounted collection covers Post Office numbers #1 to #50, all part of the initial assignment to post offices in 1869, which was done alphabetically. Post offices from Alkmaar to Hattem are covered in this volume. Worldwide - "Calling All Classic Collectors!" Duo of old-time albums that will be music to the ears of any collector of early worldwide material. A mix of both mint and used material, neatly arranged (and easily removeable) from almost entirely the pre-1900 period. The first album is an "Oppen's Postage Stamp Album" circa 1885, with 901 stamps spanning the globe, in which we we noted particular strength in Canada, British Commonwealth and South America (note, there is a wonderful looking page of Brazil "Bull's Eye" stamps, but likely early forgeries). The second album is a Scott "International Postage Stamp Album, Nineteenth Century" with 1391 stamps, again with strength in British Commonwealth and South America. While the odd small fault is to be expected, the vast majority of the stamps held within these albums look to be sound, choice examples. Includes several British "Royal" collections, back to QEII Jubilee, marriage of Charles and Diana, birthdays of the Queen Mum. This transitions to a topical collection of aircraft on about 25 Vario-brand stockpages, a collection of "Silhouettes and Profiles" and another of "Cave Art". Worldwide - Asia Accumulation. Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam stock of hundreds of mostly mint, with large quantities of complete sets and some blocks, including a bit of back of the book. The last page is housed with a bunch of "North" Vietnamese issues including those that weren’t listed in Scott at the time. This stock is all pre-1970 and housed in a manila paged "Elbe" stockbook and is intact as was purchased over 40 years ago. Has been supplemented with a small handful of more contemporary issues from these same countries. Underappreciated in their day, these stamps have been tremendously appreciated (by both collectors and catalogue editors) in more recent years. Estimate =

Worldwide - Baltic Nations. Estonia, Latvia and (to a lesser extent) Lithuania accumulation, from an extensive estate. Have no fear, there are still lots of goodies here, as this collector was only interested in quality material. The other thing that he also liked was to buy in quantities that exceeded his ability to process it, so there are auction, bidboard and dealer purchases that are still as they were originally purchased 40+ years ago, with very little material from the past 25 years. Each country has a decent basic collection, with more used than mint, and lots of town cancel interest. There is a bit of duplication, and a couple of souvenir sheets. Most are from the inter-war period, with only a bit from the post-USSR breakup. Hours of exploration here. Estimate =

Worldwide - Bankers box of wonder. We are calling it that because we are wondering how such a diverse group of material ended up in a single box. There is an intriguing handful of very old approval type booklets with worldwide, including lots of Europe (and specifically post-war mint French semi-postals). There are a few stockbooks of various sizes, conditions and contents, including German States and Canada, followed by some loose album pages that include Papua New Guinea stamps and stationery from the 1980s. Worldwide - Collection of seven European countries in an older Lighthouse springback album, in excellent condition. Finland, Gibraltar, Vatican City, Luxembourg, Norway with stronger sections of both Austria and Switzerland. A mix of mostly mint, about 2000 stamps in total, with some used issues up to 1970. Strength is post-war with lots of periods of completeness, and some nice back of the book, including semi-postals and airmail stamps. The stamps themselves are generally in excellent condition, and very lightly hinged to the pages. The first page for each country includes a sample of spaces for about the first 75 years of stamp issuing for each country, from the 1870’s to around WWII. Afterwards, it is a more robust set of pages to about 1955. Afterwards, the collector added quadrilled pages. Noted individual stamps with catalogue values up to $20.00 each. Estimate =

The final lot from this estate includes better at every turn, plus the potential for undiscovered finds here and there. Worldwide Supplies - Bankers Box of lightly-used stockbooks. A high-quality assortment 14 stockbooks, from a variety of manufacturers, but we did note these are mostly Lighthouse / Unisafe brands (mostly white-pages), filling a bankers box. While a few show a bit of wear and tear, overall these are much cleaner than we usually see. The "as new" retail on these would be well over $400.00 now, as prices of philatelic supplies have been on the rise. We had a similar lot to this in the last sale, from the same estate. Estimate =
