Striking mint Hinged (small hinge remnant) example of the uncommon 1897 OVPT "prir" issue. In 1897, an attempt to deal with a stamp shortage of 3a value stamps was made with by applying a red overprint (which proved unsatisfactory). Some of the overprinted stamps that hadn’t sold were then re-overprinted with a black "prir" overprint in two sizes. This is the larger size of the black "prir" overprint, perforated 12.75. Only 3440 stamps of this configuration were ever produced. Suffice to say, missing from almost every collection we see. Comes with a 1968 "Gronlund" certificate. 2023 Scott US$875.00 =
